Dr. Norma Kirwan, Psy.D., Clinical Psychologist

Practicing Since: 1986

Norma has always had a compassionate interest in the lives of people, in their joys, struggles, strengths and hardships. It became clear as time went on that she would pursue a career in counseling.  She began a doctoral program in clinical psychology, and after completing three years of coursework, she moved to Connecticut for her internship.  There she gained experience in a psychiatric hospital providing treatment for adolescents and adults with both mental health and addiction problems.  Norma graduated with a Psy.D. in clinical psychology in 1986 and continued to work with clients in various settings, including inpatient, partial hospital, intensive outpatient, and outpatient services.

Norma has extensive experience in community mental health as an administrator/clinician working with nonprofit agencies.  Although she worked for secular organizations, her therapeutic work has always been guided and informed by her grounding in Christian values and her faith in God’s grace.  This approach has strengthened considerably over the years as she has faced her own personal crises and grown closer to God through her involvement in church, bible study, and community with other Christians.

Having worked with people from all walks of life and with many types of illness and degrees of functioning, Norma holds a special interest and expertise in working with adults of all ages who are struggling with mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. As well as additional issues with aging, addictions, and trauma.  Her approach is eclectic, utilizing psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, relational, and client-centered principles, and integrating them with scriptural truths.

A proud and blessed adoptive mother to her now adult daughter, Norma currently lives in the Southern Connecticut area with her two dogs and is surrounded by a strong Christian community.

Dr. Norma Kirwan, Psy.D. is licensed in the state of Connecticut (#1360).
